Description
The MEGABASS DOG-X Jr. COAYU (BFS) is a finesse topwater pencil built for one job: making a small “walk-the-dog” bait cut hard and track true—even when fish are pressured or the water is ultra-clear. At just 2.75″ (71mm), it matches the smaller baitfish profile that Canadian smallmouth often key on, while still producing the crisp side-to-side slide you want from a full-size walking bait.
Why it’s different
Unlike many small pencils that “shimmy” more than they steer, the COAYU BFS version uses Megabass’ Side-Stepping Moving Balancer (PAT.) system. That internal balancer helps the lure snap into direction changes and maintain a clean, repeatable S-curve with minimal effort—ideal for long casts and precise target work around rock, docks, and shallow shoals.
Recommended conditions (field-proven guidance)
Water temperature: Recommended 38–70°F (3–21°C). In colder water, slow the cadence and add pauses; in the 50–70°F window, you can speed up the walk to trigger chasing smallmouth.
Line setup: 10–12 lb fluorocarbon is a dependable starting point for clean surface control and abrasion resistance around rock and dock hardware (adjust heavier if cover demands).
Where it shines in Canada: Clear-water fisheries—especially Great Lakes–style smallmouth water—where downsizing boosts confidence bites without sacrificing action.
How to fish it
Start with a standard walk-the-dog rhythm, then “punctuate” the retrieve:
Calm water: two short twitches + 1–2 sec pause
Searching: steady walk with a pause every 3–5 seconds
Followers but no bites: shorten twitches to make tighter, faster cuts
Specs: 2.75″ / 71mm, 1/5 oz (~5.8g), #8 hooks.
