Description
The DAIWA STEEZ CRANPO 81F is an 81 mm, 7.9 g floating bass lure that combines a lipped front body with a popper-shaped rear section. Its jointed construction allows anglers to switch between surface turns, popping and a shallow swimming retrieve.
Developed with Japanese bass angler Shunsuke Miyashima, the concept grew from his search for a lure to target shrimp-feeding bass in the Kasumigaura water system. The result brings crankbait and popper characteristics together in one compact lure.
Key Features
- Jointed cranking-popper construction: Combines a lipped front section with a popper-shaped rear body.
- Controlled turning action: Repeated twitches can produce 180-degree turns.
- Limited forward travel: The rear section pushes water while helping keep the presentation within a small area.
- Circuit-board lip: Supports responsive, controlled turns.
- Feathered rear treble: Adds visual movement during the presentation.
- Swivel-mounted front hook hanger: Allows the front hook connection to rotate.
- SaqSas-treated treble hooks: Equipped with size #8 hooks.

Controlled Turns in a Small Area
The popper-shaped rear body catches and pushes water during turns, helping the lure create disturbance without travelling far forward. This makes repeated presentations possible around a small target.
The articulated body also gives the front and rear sections different movement timing during the retrieve, adding complexity to its swimming and turning action.
Three Ways to Fish the CRANPO 81F
1. Twitch and Pause
Start with two or three short twitches, then pause. Leave enough line slack for the lure to turn freely. Adjust the pause length and twitch strength after watching how the lure responds beside the bank.
2. Surface Popping
Use a firmer rod-tip movement to create a pop and splash, then let the lure settle. Mix occasional pops into a turning retrieve to vary the disturbance without making every movement equally aggressive.
3. Steady Shallow Retrieve
Use a controlled, steady retrieve to swim the lure just below the surface. This offers another approach when fish are following near the top but are reluctant to commit to a surface presentation.
Where to Start
Suggested starting areas include shallow shorelines, reed edges, dock edges and open pockets beside cover.
Place the cast beyond the target where possible, then slow down as the lure reaches it. Keep the exposed treble hooks clear of dense vegetation.
Suggested Tackle
Use these as starting points and adjust for your fishing conditions.
- Rod: A medium-light to medium spinning or baitcasting rod with a lure rating that includes 7.9 g.
- Line: Start with 8–12 lb monofilament, or light braid with a short monofilament leader.
- Setup: Match the line diameter and rod response to the cover and the turning action you want.
- Before fishing: Check the action close to shore and adjust line slack before making longer casts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the DAIWA STEEZ CRANPO 81F floating?
Yes. The 81F is a floating model; the “F” identifies its buoyancy type.
Is the CRANPO 81F a popper or a crankbait?
It combines elements of both. The jointed design supports topwater popping and turning, while the lipped front section also allows a shallow swimming presentation.
Can I fish the CRANPO 81F with spinning tackle?
Yes. As a suggested setup, choose a spinning rod and reel suited to a 7.9 g lure. Check the rod’s casting range and use line that allows controlled lure movement.
